SUPPORT WORKER – RESIDENTIAL FOSTER CARE / YOUTH GROUP HOMES
Job Duties / Description
- Create a safe, structured, and nurturing environment within the foster home that supports the emotional, behavioural, and developmental needs of youth.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with youth while maintaining consistent communication with the care team and addressing concerns in a timely and professional manner.
- Provide direct care and supervision to youth with complex needs, including those with ASD, ODD, ADHD, mild intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and other mental health or behavioural challenges.
- Assist youth with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, grooming, dressing, meal preparation, and maintaining a clean living environment.
- Support youth in developing life skills, independence, and positive coping strategies through structured routines and individualized care plans.
- Accompany youth to school, medical appointments, therapy sessions, and recreational or community activities, providing both supervision and mentorship.
- Administer medications as prescribed and monitor for any behavioural or health-related changes, reporting concerns promptly to the appropriate team members.
- Implement behaviour management strategies and intervention techniques in alignment with established care plans and safety protocols.
- Encourage participation in physical, social, and creative activities that promote overall well-being, confidence, and personal growth.
- Prepare and provide nutritious meals in accordance with dietary needs while following proper food safety standards.
- Respond calmly and effectively to crisis situations, ensuring the safety of the youth and others while following agency protocols.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including therapists, clinicians, and external service providers, to support each youth’s individualized goals.
Qualifications
Completion of a DSW, CSW, SSW, CYW, or social worker diploma/certificate from a recognized Ontario Community College or approved private Career College, or equivalent education.
Current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR is required.
A valid and up-to-date medical assessment, including immunizations, is mandatory.
Training in CPI (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention), Safe Management, or other crisis intervention techniques is required.
Pharmacology and medication administration training is considered an asset.
Previous experience working with youth in foster care, residential care, or the social services sector is strongly preferred.
A valid G2 or G driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle is required.
Additional Requirements
Must be flexible and available to work on short notice, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
A Vulnerable Sector Police Clearance will be required upon hire.
Candidates must provide copies of all relevant education, certifications, and training documents.
